Making a referral to YP Face IT
Using CAR's tiered approach to psycho-social support provision, which recognises that interventions should be available at different levels of
intensity to meet various levels of need (see Figure 3), we intend YP Face IT to be a Level 3 intervention. It therefore requires supervision from
the CAR team (which includes a clinical child psychologist) during its trial period and supervision from a psychologist, counsellor or suitable trained health professional if the

Participants fulfilling the inclusion criteria (see below) who would like to complete the programme will be provided with a secure username and password to access YP Face IT online using the young person's home computer. All data entered into the programme (e.g. diaries, homework assignments, etc) are saved securely on a database. YP Face IT is designed to require minimal supervision from health professionals who have had brief training in its use. We can provide a simple manual to guide health professionals who wish to supervise their patients completing the programme.
Ultimately, if the intervention is successful, health professionals administering YP Face IT will be able to decide on the level of supervision their clients require. Psychologists for example might choose to use this as a tool within a programme of support; health professionals, such as GPs, might find that this tool is all that is necessary to support their patients.
At the very least the referring practitioner will have online access to the young person’s outcome measures, the results of homework and reflection activities, and will be expected to liaise with the young person following course completion to evaluate its success and if necessary refer them for higher intensity intervention.

Who can use YP Face IT?
The programme has been designed for:
- Young people aged 12-17 years.
- With a condition known to alter appearance, for example:
- Skin conditions: for example vitiligo, acne, ichthyosis, eczema, or other conditions that affect the texture of the skin, such as neurofibromatosis and epidermolysis bullosa.
- Scarring: resulting from an accident, surgery or burn.
- A condition that has been present from birth, such as a cleft lip or other craniofacial conditions
- As a result of medical treatments: hair loss, skin or weight changes as a result of chemotherapy, radiotherapy or steroid therapy etc.
- And who are experiencing appearance concerns, appearance-related anxiety or appearance-related teasing / bullying.
- Who are fluent in speaking English with normal or corrected to vision. However the programme does have an audio option for those who struggle to read text. normal
The programme is not suitable for those with:
- A history of clinical depression or psychosis.
- An eating disorder.
- Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- A learning disability severe enough to compromise informed consent.
Who can refer young people?
Young people can be referred to the YP Face IT team for consideration for entry onto the trial by Health
Professionals (for example: psychologists, social workers, specialist nurses, hospital doctors and GP's) and by charitable organisations who
currently provide psychosocial advice and support for appearance-related conditions, for example Changing Faces.
